At first glance, Alain Uy can appear to be your prototypical twenty-something-year-old: a Southern Californian with a penchant for late-night foosball tournaments and early-morning surf sessions. Although these things are true, this UCLA graduate student eludes definition and is beginning to prove his uncanny ability to ride any wave that life may bring him.

Having completed his rookie year as an Account Executive at ESP Computer Services, Alain Uy continues to learn and grow as a professional in the publishing/circulation industry. “Three years ago, as an Order Entry Clerk for ESP, I never thought I’d ever be in a position to learn about publishing and circulation by directly interacting with the people that actually make it run,” Uy said.

One person who knew Uy would someday be in this position was Michael Jordan, Director of Operations at ESP Computer Services. “We knew Alain was smart and educated, but it was his insatiable desire to learn more that made him such an intriguing Account Executive candidate,” said Jordan.

In 2004, Uy acted as Publisher and Editor in Chief of a magazine of his own creation called PUSH Magazine–a music and lifestyle magazine that struck a chord with local independent artists and featured in-depth articles on artists such as Beck, A Tribe Called Quest, and The Killers. The magazine, although short-lived, fed the desire that Jordan mentioned within Uy to pursue a career in publishing. So in 2005, after finishing up his master’s degree at UCLA, he decided to fully embrace ESP in a new role as an Account Executive.

Nancy Ninive, a Senior Marketing Director for Conde Nast, described her work with Uy. “Being a new account rep and unfamiliar with the way we work, Alain had a major learning curve to overcome when he took over our account,” she said. “Alain easily saw this as a challenge and never backed down.”

Uy says: “Well, it’s not like I don’t have a strong foundation here at ESP. It’s easy to do your job when ESP provides every report, every breakdown, anything my clients need.” Uy is referring to ESP’s “pubservice” system, in which clients have daily access to their reports. Even though the system makes his life a little easier, Alain Uy will be the first to admit that he still has a long way to go. But the way things are going, Uy appears to be ready to ride any wave of possibility.
